The Danes Allan Christensen and Kristoffer Szilas climbed the Heckmair route of the Eiger north face during April 11-12.

– We checked the route out from below during a rest day of our Kandersteg visit earlier this winter. We spent three days in Chamonix to get acclimatized before going to Grindelwald, says Szilas, who recently returned home to Copenhagen.

One day earlier, a French team of three climbers managed a single day ascent. During the descent hiking, one of the French climbers had a fatal accident.

– We heard about it once we were down safe. The accident took the sting out of the triumph of climbing such a histroric classic.
