Author Mikael Widerberg says the the upcoming printed crag topo for Stockholm will be released in March or April 2007.
Most of the research is finalized. Claes Jelinek have contributed during the extensive on site research. Today Claes is a sport climber just like Mikael, but with 30 years of local experience he also accounts for the historic perspective. Robin Dahlberg has contributed with several topos. There will be several hundred new sport routes, and a few new crags.
- Nothing revolutionary. At the Noret crag for instance, there is so much more than just the popular Röda Lacket wall. Most of it peripheral, though.
Mikael successively established himself as de facto author of the new topo. He started by setting up several sport routes in the area.
- I felt obliged to put the topos online and noticed that it actually worked. People started visiting my crags.
The collection grew to the extensive online sport climbing topo at Stockholms Nätförare. Eventually, a boulder guide was added. The upcoming printed edition will also include trad routes, primarily in facsimile from the 1996 edition.
- It is a fun thing to keep the classic wordings for historic routes.
Mikael says the previous publishers don’t mind. There is a royalty agreement for the release. The previous topo, published 1996 by Niklas Björnerstedt and Lars Svadängs, sold out several years ago. The dialog on a new edition is alive since, with successively postponed release date.
Gradings will be French for sport and trad, with Swedish grades (similar to Norwegian / UIAA / German grades) in brackets for trad routes. Mikael works half-time as a video producer. With the release coming up, the other half is easily consumed.
- It would be hard without my professional experience in publishing. I make all graphics myself in Adobe Illustrator. I create the layout using Adobe Indesign.
The total print budget is 100’ SEK (10’ Euro, 13’ USD). A substantial part will be covered by ads, that still need to be sold. The online topo, lying fallow during the production of the printed topo, has no external ads.
- The first edition will be printed in some 5000 copies. It will be pretty thick. The price will be similar to the recent Göteborg topo. Deadline for first ascents will be a fortnight prior to printing.
